Upcycle idea: tote bag

•CLASS DESCRIPTION•

This beginner-friendly 4 hour workshop covers basic skill on operation a sewing machine + making a small tote bag from scratch. Tote bag is one of great, simple ways of upcycling garments and scrap fabric to keep them out of the landfill. Either bring your own materials that you'd like to turn into a bag (scrap fabric, garments, rice bag) or choose from our fabric collection. 

Take advantage of the chance to learn in a beautiful studio that will, for sure, stimulate your creativity.

What you'll learn:
- quick tutorial on basic operation of the sewing machine
- cutting out the pattern for the 13.5"x11.5" tote bag 
- assembling the cut material into a bag
- different ways of decorating a bag

Sewing machine (not mandatory)
Fabric/material or garment you'd like to upcycle

* Highly recommended to bring your own sewing machine. Machines differ in functionality across different models and makes, so it is best to familiarized with one machine that you know you will be using frequently. Contact Kye (info@umiquellc.com) to inquire about machine rental.

•INSTRUCTOR BIO•
Kye Harford started his sewing journey during the pandemic in 2020 and established a brand based in Hilo with "sustainable creation" as the core concept. He currently focuses on collaborating with local artists, on- and off-island, to create primarily fashion items. His other work includes garment alterations and repairs as well as custom work.

Bonus: as Kye is a native Japanese speaker, born in Japan and raised in Okinawa, you have the chance to also learn Japanese during the workshops if you're up for it.
